Hapkido is a ruthlessly effective means of self-defence - and is emphatically not a sport. It uses all ranges and methods of technique - including throws similar to those of both Aikido and Judo, kicks and punches not unlike those of Karate and Tae Kwon Do, nerve and pressure point attacks, joint locks and the use of both formal and extemporised weapons. Due to HapkidoÕs roots in Daito Ryu Aiki Ju Jutsu, great strength is not required - as the attackerÕs force and momentum are directed to the receiverÕs advantage. Thus, anyone - irrespective of age, gender or size - can learn Hapkido. Although there is some free sparring, there is no competitive fighting in Hapkido and the emphasis in practice is upon safety and fun while acquiring skills and technique. All levels welcome.
